How would you describe your work?

This first question is already the most difficult one for me. I don't find it easy to quickly describe my own work in a few sentences. I would say that it is figurative painting in which the subject is predominantly painting itself. The creatures that romp around in my paintings always emerge from the colour. I can transport moods through them just as I can with the colour itself. In combination, the result is ideally a painting that touches you, perhaps makes you feel melancholy, but at the same time also makes you smile a little.

What influences do you have in your work?

Normally I go to exhibitions, museums, galleries and project spaces a lot. Of course, that's sadly not possible at the moment and I miss it a lot. Nevertheless, I can continue to work for myself in the studio, so these influences are not the sole basic drive for the work. All kinds of everyday influences can have an effect on my work. Some colour combination I saw somewhere in the city, for example. Lately I have also often painted colour gradients that look a bit like sunrises or sunsets that I have often watched from my studio window on winter afternoons.

What materials and techniques do you work with?

I work mainly with oil and acrylic on canvas, sometimes also on paper. For the large works, I usually start with acrylic, because it dries very fast and allows me to continue working quickly. I tend to be the rather impatient type. Then I continue to build up the picture in layers of oil paint. Lately, though, I've been starting more and more often with oil paint.

Is there an approach with which you converge when starting new work or series of works and what is your way of working in the further process?

The approach is actually always similar. I build and prime new canvases in different sizes and then I just start painting. I always paint several pictures at the same time. In this way, there are also references, in terms of colour or form, between paintings from the same work phases, but I never see them as a series. In the end, each painting has to function on its own and each painting also functions slightly differently. In the further process, I may revise a painting several times over a period of weeks, twisting and turning, painting on the floor or on the wall, but sometimes it also happens that it is finished in one go.

What is your motivation to work artistically?

In principle, always wanting to get one step further with the work. You finish a painting and then immediately ask yourself, what could the next one look like? Where is what I am doing leading me?

Since I work intuitively in the broadest sense, I don't have any sketches, plans or concrete ideas in my head before I start a new painting. I let myself be guided by the colour and my hand and see where it goes; I also surprise myself again and again in the process. For me, that's the great thing about my medium. Even if I am sometimes very frustrated in the working process, I keep at it and in the end a result comes out with which I am satisfied. And then my fingers start itching again to tackle the next one.

What helped you to make the transition from art school to self-employment as a freelance artist?

Always sticking to your own work and also a pinch of luck. I got a residency scholarship in Berlin right after graduating, so it was of course a little easier for me to enter the whole art world. Nevertheless, I had to work at first to finance my life and my studio, and it wasn't always easy to reconcile everything. The will to push my own work always kept me on the ball. Then, of course, I also found the right people in the right places who supported me, from mentors to gallery owners. I am incredibly grateful that I am now at the point where I can live and work as a self-employed artist.
